Event details

Over the last decade or so, questions about how to understand the notions of metaphysical dependence have come to the fore.

In particular, philosophers have become interested in the role for a primitive, hyperintensional notion such as grounding in framing disputes and clarifying positions in a range of different areas of philosophical investigation. This renewed interest in metaphysical dependence promises to shed new light on questions in ethics and metaethics where dependence and priority have always played a significant role. In the light of some interesting recent work on the topic, this conference draws together philosophers working at the intersection of metaethics and metaphysics to discuss the possibilities for applications of the grounding debate to ethics and metaethics.

Speakers:

Selim Berker (Harvard): The Explanatory Character of Moral Principles

Mary Leng (York): Grounding in Mathematical and Moral Explanations

Debbie Roberts (Edinburgh): Grounding: Relaxed or Robust?

Ralf Bader (Oxford): TBA
