Mr Charlie Boddicker is a Postgraduate research student for Philosophy at the University of Southampton.

I received a BA in Political Science and Philosophy in 2014 from Indiana University Bloomington, and an MA in philosophy from the University of Southampton in 2015. My undergraduate honours thesis focused on Arthur Schopenhauer and Friedrich Schelling’s theories of tragedy and my MA dissertation on Arthur Schopenhauer’s metaphysics. My interest in Schopenhauer has always been tied to an interest in Nietzsche, and because of the department’s strengths in 19th century German philosophy (and Nietzsche in particular) Southampton is an excellent place to pursue a PhD on the topic. I am currently researching the role of dramatic comedy and laughter in Nietzsche’s later works.

Research interests

19th Century German Philosophy (especially Schopenhauer and Nietzsche), aesthetics and the philosophy of art

Research group

19th and early 20th Century European Philosophy

Affiliate research group

Analytic Aesthetics and the History of Aesthetics

I am currently a tutor for a first year course on existentialism and have previously led tutorials for the course ‘knowledge and mind.’
