Miss Elizabeth Ventham is a Postgraduate Researcher (PGR) within Philosophy at the University of Southampton.

I received both my BA and MA degrees from The University of Southampton, which I can also thank for my keen interest in ethics and reasons. My undergraduate dissertation focused on rule- vs act- consequentialism and for my MA I branched out into reasons internalism and moral demandingness.

Research interests

My research at the moment is focused on supporting an account of reasons internalism, such as that of Bernard Williams, in which reasons for action are necessarily related to an agent's desires. I hope to look at the way this relates to moral demandingness, and argue that a moral code does not need to be necessarily motivating to be plausible. I am also interested in the relationship between pleasure and motivation, as well as meta-ethics and normative-ethics more broadly. I ultimately also intend to defend act- consequentialism as part of my thesis.
