Mr James McGuiggan is a Postgraduate Researcher within Philosophy at the University of Southampton.

I received a B.A. from NUI, Maynooth in music and philosophy in 2008, a B.Phil. from St. Patrick's College, Maynooth in the philosophy of religion in the same year, and an M.Phil. from the University of St. Andrews in philosophy in 2011, for which I wrote a dissertation on the philosophy of art.

Research interests

My research is on the philosophy of art. Specifically, I will argue in my Ph.D. thesis that R. G. Collingwood's account of what art is and why it is so important can meet the objections that have been levelled against it, particularly the objections that Collingwood's account is problematically individualistic and that he has no room for the insight that the expression of certain emotions count against the value of the artwork.
