Daniel Devine is a Research Fellow on the TrustGov project, which explores trust in national and global governance.

I research policy, politics and what people think about it.

I joined the TrustGov project as a Research Fellow in September 2019. TrustGov is a large project funded by the UK’s Economic and Social Research Council which studies political and social trust around the world – its causes, consequences and patterns.

More generally, I’m interested in political behaviour: why people vote and think the way they do and its causes and consequences. I specialise in the trust people have in their political institutions, the consequences this has on policy making and elites, and how this is changed by European and global integration.

I am currently completing my PhD in Politics, also at Southampton. My PhD studies how European integration has influenced political trust and democratic satisfaction in domestic institutions and why. My PhD and MSc are funded by the ESRC on a 1+3 stipend. During my PhD I spent time at KU Leuven and GESIS Cologne as a visiting researcher.

Before starting the PhD, I finished an MSc in Governance and Policy at Southampton (2015-16). Prior to Southampton, I did my undergraduate in Politics at the University of Essex (2011-14).

I have worked with think tanks and related organisations. Most recently, I worked at the Open Society European Policy Institute (Brussels) as a Consultant Researcher, and have worked at the Institute for Government (London) as a Research Assistant in 2015 and returned in 2019 as a Research Associate, on a secondment from the South Coast Doctoral Training Partnership (SCDTP).

Research interests

I’m interested in political behaviour as it relates to public opinion, political attitudes and voting in the British and European context. My PhD and largest ongoing agenda is how these relate to international integration.

Within TrustGov, I am focusing on (survey) experiments and the consequences of trust for policy making, preferences and elites.
