Campaigning

The variety of modules available in Social Sciences allowed me to shape my own degree.

Q: Why did you choose to undertake your studies at the University of Southampton?

I attended a University open day during my gap year and it was obvious at the time that the University was investing heavily in state-of-the-art facilities across the campus – from the new sports centre and the Hartley Library, to the Students' Union and halls of residence.

Q: How did you find the course?

The variety of modules available in Social Sciences allowed me to shape my own degree, focusing on the political issues and theories that I was most interested in. Writing a dissertation then provided the opportunity to take this further independently, proposing and researching a topic of contemporary significance.

Q: What extra-curricular opportunities did you get involved with alongside your degree?

Beyond that, the huge range of clubs and societies on campus gave me the chance to challenge myself with a variety of different roles, from campaigning up and down the country with the Labour Club to encouraging students to think about employability or start their own businesses with the entrepreneurs' society.

Q: What did you do after graduating?

After graduating, I travelled to America to help Senator Barack Obama's presidential campaign.

Q: What do you feel you have achieved as a result of studying here?

Without a doubt, my experiences at the University of Southampton have fired my interest in politics and opened up a huge range of opportunities for the future. My time at Southampton challenged and shaped my political opinions, helped me develop invaluable skills for the future and gave me the grounding to take advantage of the opportunities ahead.
