In May 2020, Dr Kamil Zwolski hosted the first annual Jean Monnet Chair Roundtable ‘Debating European Security’, which welcomed guest speakers and over 30 students. The event forms part of Kamil’s Jean Monnet Chair teaching and research award from the European Union.

The discussion revolved around COVID-19, with a particular focus on the geopolitical implications of the pandemic. The discussion examined the role of China and how it is attempting to position itself as a global leader in pandemic response, and the implications this may have for Europe.

Discussion also turned to Russia's role in providing assistance to Italy. Prof. Kaunert, one of the world's foremost experts on the EU and refugees, made links between migration security and health security, specifically looking at the role of Turkey.

Students joined the debate, which was vigorous and insightful. One student invited us to reflect whether the world post-pandemic will become even more globalised due to state recognition that they need more cooperation? Or is the contrary trend to be expected, with states striving to tame the globalising forces more than before?

The event was supported by the European Union's Erasmus+ Programme. The Roundtable is an annual event aimed at students taking the Jean Monnet Chair module European Security Governance. The European Union provides generous support to enhance learning on this module and support innovative learning initiatives, such as the Roundtable.

Invited guest speakers included:

  • Prof. Christian Kaunert, Chair of Policing and Security, as well as Director of the International Centre for Policing and Security at the University of South Wales.
  • Dr Mike Edwards, Senior Lecturer in the International School of Policing and Security, University of South Wales. Mike has extensive experience of working within military, policing and security roles at local, regional, national and international levels.
