Doing fieldwork in covid times. Prof. Riggirozzi innovative participatory research

As part of the ReGHID project, a pilot study was carried out as a preliminary step towards the ReGHID full survey identifying what are the sexual and reproductive needs of displaced women and girls during migration, and what are the barriers to achieving their right to health. 

The final survey will be implemented end of June/July in cities of Manaus and Boa Vista, Brazil. This pilot was carried out in two shelters hosting Venezuelan migrants, April 24-31 2021. In addition to the 30 questionnaires, two focus groups were also carried out, one per shelter to support the assessment of the tool. A week later, the same women who took part of the pilot were invited to take part of a Photovoice activity as a way thanking them and making them part of the project, including them as researchers. 

Photovoice gives them voice through photos they take based on a previous discussion about their experiences in relation to sexual and reproductive health risks, challenges, needs and barriers (as women and as migrants). The photos were collected in 10 days and we will discuss testimonials with them and add all in a photobook that women will present to other migrant women and to policy makers. Wish I was there rather than in a screen!
