Mr Mark Frank is Postgraduate research student within Economic, Social and Political Sciences at the University of Southampton.

I am a mature student undertaking postgraduate research in my retirement following a career in IT.

I am following a four-year programme originating in the University of Southampton Web Science Doctoral Training Centre. I took the Web Science MSc in 2011/12 and now I am doing my PhD in Politics and International Relations.

Research interests

My PhD is entitled 'The potential for open data to enhance democratic engagement in UK local government', and the research focuses on:

  • The potential for open data to change political engagement
  • The social factors affecting the quality of data on the Web
  • The use of the Web for Public Engagement with Science
