Niamh Ward BSc International Relations
2nd year student

Each year so far my degree has had a mandatory Statistics module. I haven’t done a statistics module since Year 10, but university has allowed me to discover a new love for the subject.
What is it like studying here?
The course itself is challenging and consists mostly of coursework. However this has never been a struggle as lecturers are always on hand to support us.
Each year so far my degree has had a mandatory Statistics module. I haven’t done a statistics module since Year 10, but university has allowed me to discover a new love for the subject. I now hope to use a high amount of political statistics in my job when I graduate.
What are the study facilities like at the University?
I spend on average seven hours a day in Hartley library. This is because I find the library the best environment to work in, and has all the facilities I need to comfortably study – Phone and laptop charging, and a small café/shop.
What are the optional module choices like?
I have had the opportunity to study modules outside my core subject area. I have also taken modules in Russian Language, Sociology, and History. I have thoroughly enjoyed these modules, especially Russian Language which I believe will assist me in later life.
What have been your Southampton ‘highlights’ so far?
At the end of my first year I was elected the new President of the Social Sciences Society. This has allowed me to collaborate with other societies to run events such as the Humanities and Social Sciences Christmas Ball, a Summer Boat Ball, as well as our own socials and events such as court trips. I hope to run a Battle of the Social Sciences event to encourage the integration of freshers next year.
