Sophie Maguire BSc Politics and International Relations
2017 Graduate, with First Class Honours

The thing I enjoyed the most about this course was the freedom to choose a wide variety of topics for dissertations. On a whole the faculty were extremely accommodating and ensured that, whilst there may not be a specialist in that topic, that they went out of their way to help you.
Why did you choose to come and study at Southampton?
I chose Southampton because it was a Russell Group university that was in a good location, near London and also by the sea.
Southampton also offered a range of options to take modules from other disciplines which meant we were able to have a wider range of experiences in education and also in terms of meeting new people.
What is it like studying here?
Southampton has a great atmosphere where there is a great sense of community and you honestly feel that on both your course and in societies that you know a lot of people. There were always great nights out and so many things to get involved with around campus.
There were some great lectures on the course but one of the most outstanding ones was Christian Enemark, his lectures are always stimulating and he is willing to go the extra mile for all his students, whether they are in his modules or not.

What have been your Southampton ‘highlights’?
There are a range of balls and events across the years that make university fun. These include freshers ball, and the social sciences Christmas ball. The best event of the year for me each year was the Politics boat ball.
How has your time at Southampton helped you to grow as a person?
Southampton has enabled me to pursue my interests in developmental studies. Southampton also gave me a range of experiences to add to my CV, including becoming a Student Ambassador, and Events Secretary for Politics Society.
