Overview

About the School of Primary Care, Population Sciences and Medical Education

We undertake a wide range of research, teaching and enterprise activities.

The school consists of 3 main departments:

We also host the NIHR Research Support Centre (RSS) hub and specialist centre for public health, delivered by the University of Southampton and partners.

Our research is wide-ranging and multidisciplinary. We deliver high quality research to enhance prevention, early detection and management of health-related conditions.

We collaborate nationally and internationally with academics and clinicians to develop, deliver and implement research that has an impact on policy and clinical practice. Our active patient and public involvement members help ensure our research is inclusive and relevant to patients’ priorities.

We help develop the next generation of researchers and clinicians. We have active early researcher and postgraduate groups, and our staff lead and make major contributions to medical undergraduate teaching and postgraduate training.

Our Medical Education group drives pedagogical research and provides educational staff development which underpins educational programmes across the faculty.

Equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI)

Our school EDI committee provides leadership on equality, diversity and inclusion, in line with University and faculty objectives, strategies and charters.

We aim to create a workplace that:

  • celebrates differences and the benefits they bring in diversity of thought, ideas and contributions to our community
  • ensures meaningful equality of opportunity by recognising and supporting each person’s individual circumstances and giving them what they need to succeed
  • has a culture where everyone feels they belong, and feels safe and valued for being themselves

To achieve these goals, we develop action plans based on:

  • action plans based on feedback from staff
  • data on issues such as pay gaps, promotion and protected characteristics
  • university and faculty priorities
  • current issues

We meet every few weeks to develop, monitor and evaluate our progress and establish further actions. Between meetings we work in sub-committees to carry out our actions.

We report to the School Executive Committee and liaise with other schools through the Faculty of Medicine's EDI School Leads Forum and the Athena Swan Self-Assessment Team.
