Event details

Dr Charlotte Veal and Dr Emma Roe within the University of Southampton, will deliver a talk entitled “Mapping microbial stories: Creative microbial aesthetic and cross-disciplinary intervention in understanding nurses’ infection prevention practices.”

Abstract
Consistent implementation of hand-washing within the hospital environment remains a challenge in infection prevention (IP) procedures.  IP is one of a number of measures to tackle antimicrobial resistance. The paper details a cross-disciplinary comparative experimental design where nurses (n=2) performed a series of routine care procedures in a mock-ward setting where traces of coloured ultra-violet glow-powders had been purposely placed, firstly with routine hand-washing and secondly without routine hand-washing. The results presented as a series of photos, video-clips, ethnographic observations and nurse interviews explore nurse-microbial relations and the potential for affective and embodied encounters with microbial worlds to generate new insight in IP.

Dr Charlotte Veal
Charlotte is a Research Fellow in Human Geography (University of Southampton) who works across disciplinary boundaries to examine the intimate, embodied and everyday rhythms of human/non-human practice, the securitisation and biopolitics of bodies ‘at risk’, and arts-led methods (including dance and theatre methodologies, body-space-time cartographies, and ecological citizenship approaches) for social scientific scholarship. Charlotte's current and future research projects include: arts-led responses to mobility and security of bodies at international borders; art, geopolitics and statecraft; and the performances and practices of nursing care.

Our seminars are by invitation only, if you would like to attend please contact Elena.
