Professional Recognition of Educator Practice (PREP)

Portfolio route to HEA accreditation
Portfolio route to HEA accreditation

The Professional Recognition of Educator Practice Framework (PREP) offers teaching and learning staff the opportunity to develop and evidence their educator practice, knowledge and professional values throughout their career and achieve recognition by the HEA at fellow, senior fellow or principal fellow level.

Who is PREP for?

PREP is a portfolio approach to recognition and is primarily intended for staff who are experienced educators and/or those who do not have the opportunity to complete the course-based programme for new lecturing staff (PGCAP). New staff with little or no teaching experience will be expected to complete the taught programme (PGCAP) wherever possible and engage in the PREP Framework to support their future career development.

The PREP Framework has been accredited by the Higher Education Academy (HEA) and can lead to recognition at Descriptors D1-D4 of the UK Professional Standards Framework (UKPSF).

Descriptor Recognition awarded
D1 Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy
D2 Fellow of the Higher Education Academy
D3 Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy
D4 Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy

What are the benefits of HEA fellowship?

HEA fellowship provides recognition of the professional standing of your teaching practice and is recognised by the University, and across the HE sector, as a measure of your expertise and accomplishment.

What is involved?

The recognition process requires submission of a portfolio of evidence, including:

How is achievement assessed?

Portfolios are assessed by the PREP Framework Review Board and applicants will be required to participate in a professional conversation about their portfolio with the Board.

What support will I receive?

As well as the initial briefing and the support of ILIaD, all staff following the PREP framework are supported by a mentor.  Mentors are experienced educators who hold at least the HEA Descriptor (1-4) for which you are applying, and can provide guidance on meeting the requirements. A list of current PREP Mentors is available here and staff undertaking PREP are asked to contact their preferred mentor to request their support.

How do I find out more?

To find out more about PREP, please take a look at the PREP handbook at the bottom of the page. In addition, introductory briefings for staff considering joining PREP are held at regular intervals throughout the year (see dates below).  To book your place at one of the briefings visit the University's online booking system
