Research interests

My research is broadly directed towards uncovering the nature of humans’ fundamental psychological needs (e.g., the needs for meaning in life, to make sense of the world, and to belong and be loved) and the means by which people fulfill these needs in order to maintain psychological well-being. For instance, what are the most psychologically efficient and physically healthy routes people can take to meet important psychological needs? How can people meet these needs in ways that promote effective organization and peaceful coexistence of Earth’s 7 billion people? I am also interested in how fundamental psychological needs interface with one another to promote adaptive psychological functioning. Within this overarching theme, I have conducted and am currently conducting a number of specific projects that contribute to the literatures on self-esteem, self-definition, self-sacrifice, culture, intergroup relations, personality, and emotions.
