Selective Mutism is a rare mental disorder with a mean age of onset in early childhood. The disorder is characterized by the consistent failure to speak in specific social situations although the child speaks in other situations. Despite of the huge social and scholar impact the disorder has, little is known about the psychopathology and its successful treatment yet. The current talk will give an overview over the actual research results with respect to different aspects and in comparison with Social Phobia.

Professor Christina Schwenck, University of Kiel. Christina Schwenck is Professor, Department of Developmental and Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychology at Christian-Albrechts-University of Kiel. Prof. Schwenck has completed her clinical training in child and adolescent psychotherapy and clinical supervision. She has worked as Senior Psychologist at the Universities of Munich and Frankfurt before she became full professor in 2015. Currently, Prof. Schwenck is vice president of the International Association of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Allied Professions (IACAPAP). Her research interests comprise autism spectrum disorder, conduct disorder, selective mutism, and children of parents with mental illness.
