Hi, I'm Rayan and I studied MSc in Foundations of Clinical Psychology at the University of Southampton.

As an international student, I was interested in learning about the latest global mental health theories and culturally sensitive practices in different countries across the world.

Why did you want to come to the University of Southampton?

I chose the University of Southampton because it offered the right degree for me. It not only gives you new insights into clinical psychology but it also equips you with the skills you’ll need for a successful career in mental health. Half of the modules are research-based which gives you a real advantage when applying for jobs and it also offers a leadership and management option that teaches you essential skills for any job in today’s world.

As an international student, I was interested in learning about the latest global mental health theories and culturally sensitive practices in different countries across the world.

I was fortunate to gain a Said Foundation scholarship. Mr Said sponsors up to 30 students from the Middle East to study for a postgraduate qualification in the UK and I am very thankful for that opportunity. Applying was a straightforward process. There is plenty of information available online to guide you through the process and you can apply once you have an acceptance letter from the partner university of your choice.

What have been the highlights of your course?

I personally loved it all. The staff are very supportive and understanding, I’ve made friends from all around the world and there’s always something fun happening on campus.

I really enjoyed learning about different interventions and practices in the lectures. It has made me more passionate about mental health and psychology.

I love movies so joined Union Films and even took a self-defence class.

What are you doing now?

I’m currently working in the NHS with cancer patients at Basingstoke Hospital. My main interest is evaluating and developing interventions that promote people’s mental health. I am looking forward to gaining more experience in the field and then going back to university for a PhD.

Eventually, I would like to work in policy making and service evaluation in the mental health field.

Is there anything else you would like to add about your experience at Southampton?

It was fab!
