Chaired by Zoe Kleinman, BBC Presenter & Senior Reporter.

Organised by the Clinical Informatics Research Unit, Faculty of Medicine, University of Southampton.

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a profound impact on the UK and around the globe. By September 2020, there have been >30 million confirmed cases and over 1 million COVID-19 deaths.

With the emergence of a new infectious disease, there is an urgent need to gather new knowledge that can support the care of patients, reduce transmission, and eventually allow populations to return to their normal way of life.

The University of Southampton (UoS) has extensive expertise across many areas of research and medicine. Many groups and individuals have used their skills and knowledge to great effect in supporting the pandemic response, and developing and applying the findings from research and clinical practice.

A few case studies of the UoS response have been highlighted in this webinar (with profuse apologies to the many colleagues who are doing excellent work who we couldn’t fit into this programme!).

The talks cover COVID-19 vaccines; how the global health world is spending research money and how can it be spent better; the use of maps and movement of populations to work out the spread of COVID-19; bringing engineers and doctors together; the impact of inequalities and ‘long COVID’; the psychological effects of a pandemic on parents and children, and examples of our global health research with colleagues in Ghana.
