Sustainability in the Shipping Industry: A Multidisciplinary Approach

Join a free two day conference funded by the Institute for Maritime Law (IML) at the University of Southampton and Gard, and organised by the IML and the Southampton Marine and Maritime Institute (SMMI) , with tailored support from Public Policy|Southampton.

This event will take a multidisciplinary approach to interrogate the environmental challenges confronting the maritime industry on four main themes: air pollution, impact on water, noise pollution and impact on biodiversity.

Attendees will gain a unique insight into the research conducted on sustainability in the maritime industry from a multidisciplinary perspective - this encompasses challenges, problems, future developments and suggestions for policy reforms.

The event also aims to develop viable solutions to ensure that the operation of ships and ports remains safe and efficient but is more sustainable with greatly reduced greenhouse gas emissions and other pollutants.

Key speakers at the event include Professor Damon Teagle , Director of the SMMI, Professor Andrea Lista , Director of the IML, Megan Cousins-Booth, CSO Policy Lead at the Maritime & Coastguard Agency and Tom Strang, Senior Vice President, Maritime Affairs, Carnival Corporation.
