Low temperature flexural testing of foam materials

RIfI solve all types of problems for the Oil and Gas sector by characterising the materials used by the industry.

The insulation used in LNG (liquid natural gas) carriers and onshore facilities require experimental testing at –163 °C to certify their installation and service. RIfI draws on over 40 years of experience of characterising the thermo-mechanical performance of materials and components like pipes, hoses, and supporting structures for storage at these temperatures and temperatures down to –269 °C.

Composites are able to withstand the harsh subsea environment without corroding, whilst delivering lower overall weight.

RIfI engineers test the performance of many types of composites and deploy optical and other NDT (non-destructive testing) methods to inspect the failure mechanisms of these materials under static and fatigue loading.
