Dr Tiejun Ma speaks at 7th SKBI Annual Conference

Dr. Tiejun Ma from the Centre for Risk Research (CRR) was recently invited to present his work and host a panel discussion at the 7th SKBI Annual Conference hosted by the Sim Kee Boon Institute for Financial Economics (SKBI) at Singapore Management University (SMU).

The conference attracted 340 attendees from diverse industrial and academic backgrounds, ranging from finance and insurance to technology and entrepreneurship. The conference theme was “Advances in Data Science and Implications for Business” which reflected the increasing level of interest in data science and its implications for business.

A number of successful and prominent industry practitioners, regulators and academic researchers shared their diverse experiences on how to embrace, respond to, and adopt changes related to Big Data. In particular, the conference focussed on today’s ever evolving digital economy that produces rapidly changing analytical requirements.

Dr. Ma and the panel members discussed challenges and opportunities that companies face when assembling or using large data. The members argued that opportunities include learning more easily about customer behaviour and other aspects of business. However, they also asserted that companies must first be able to assemble and understand these datasets before they can become “smart” data. Dr. Ma pointed out that this process requires development and mastery of the requisite tools to analyse complex data sets and that, although this can be challenging, this is something which the CRR is spear-heading.
