The Centre for Risk Research (CRR) is delighted to announced that one of its members, Professor Chris Chapman, has recently published a new book titled ‘Enlightened Planning: Using Systematic Simplicity to Clarify Opportunity, Risk and Uncertainty for Much Better Management Decision Making’. Furthermore, on 17th July 2019, the book topped the Book Authority chart as the Best New Book in Decision Making

Following the core principle of one of his previous books, ‘Keep It Simple Systematically’,  this new book focuses on how strategy, risk management and project management are often considered separately by those applying their principles—but at their most effective, all are dependent upon each other for success. Enlightened Planning teaches this holistic perspective and demonstrates how a synthesis of these approaches yields far greater opportunities. Using real-life cases, the book explains how strategic, calculated risks can be less inherently risky than chronic risk aversion over time. Enlightened Planning shows how organised, systematic thought processes can demystify the complexities of decision-making when considering a huge variety of concerns at once.

Professor Chris Chapman is currently Emeritus Professor of Management Science within Southampton Business School. He has been a consultant and academic focused on opportunity, risk and uncertainty management for about 50 years and has extensive experience working with a wide range of organisations across the world. He was previously the Director of Southampton Management School and the President of the Operational Research Society. He has been the author/co-author of widely acknowledged books and papers, including ‘Project Risk Management: Process, Techniques and Insights (2003)’ and ‘How to Manage Project Opportunity and Risk (2011)’. Notably, Professor Chapman was recently identified as one the world’s ‘Risk Originals’, a distinct group of thought leaders who have shaped the field of risk and uncertainty management through innovative challenges to conventional practices.
