Capture-recapture methodology published in leading journal

Published: 31 October 2013

A team from the biostatistics statistics group in S3RI together with national and international scientists published an important result in the field of capture-recapture methodology in leading journal 'Biometrics'.

Capture-recapture methods estimate the hidden part of an elusive target population (the dark number of hidden scrapie, of hidden illegal immigration, of hidden disease). A general purpose estimator has been developed by the Taiwanese scientist Ann Chao which provides a valid lower bound for hidden amount.

Until now it was unknown how covariate information such as age, gender, or location could be included in the estimator. The recently published paper is closing this gap and improving the lower bound considerably. With this and other important research, S3RI are continuing to push the boundaries of statistical science research.
