The Statistics and Operational Research group remains in the top 50 of the QS World Rankings by Subject 2020, climbing 11 places to 37th worldwide. This group is a major component of S3RI and this recognition of the work of everyone involved is very welcome.

Professor Dankmar Böhning, Director of the S3RI, stressed the benefits of Southampton being home to one of the UK’s largest concentration of statisticians. “It is a great pleasure to see that S3RI enjoys a global reputation for excellence in research into core statistical methodologies with many direct applications, particularly in the social sciences, engineering, health and medicine. Our 50 academics, research and support staff make up one of the largest groups of statisticians in the UK. We provide specialist expertise to many companies and organisations worldwide; the results of our collaborations inform our teaching so students directly benefit from our world-leading international research.”

For Nikos Tzavidis, Professor of Statistical Methodology and Head of Economic, Social and Political Sciences, the ranking also reflects the diversity of expertise offered through a number of specialist centres within the University.
