The Southampton Statistical Sciences Research Institute (S3RI) is delighted to announce Peter J Diggle, Distinguished Professor at Lancaster University and President of the Royal Statistical Society, as guest speaker at the Autumn Special S3RI Seminar, November 22nd 2016. The rise of data science ask questions about the role of the discipline of Statistics. Professor Diggle first argues that, although there is a threat to the discipline, there is also a much greater opportunity to re-emphasize the universal relevance of statistical method to the interpretation of data, and he will give a short historical outline of the increasingly important links between statistics and information technology. The core of the talk is a summary of several recent research projects, through which Peter hopes to demonstrate that statistics makes an essential, but incomplete, contribution to the emerging field of ‘electronic health’ research. Finally, Peter offers personal thoughts on how statistics might best be organised in a research-led university, on what we should teach our students and on some issues broadly related to data science where the Royal Statistical Society can take a lead.
