Special seminar

  • Under the new independence legislation, the National Statistician takes the lead role for promoting the quality of official statistics; good practice in relation to official statistics; and the comprehensiveness of official statistics. We are also required to develop and maintain definitions, methodologies, classifications and standards for official statistics and promote their use. These legal requirements cover all official statistics. Methodology will lead by developing a new Government Statistical Service quality strategy, contribute to GSS statistical policy guidance and bring together and promote common standards and classifications. The Methodology Consultancy Service will help GSS departments by providing paid for statistical services, helping them to follow the guidance and preparing them for the assessment of their statistics by the Statistics Authority.

Our new ONS vision sets out a number of goals which stress the important role that Methodology will play over the next few years. We will see a greater focus on analysis, supporting standardised statistical systems and tools, more streamlined designs and integrated sources, and improved collection methods to reduce respondent load. In addition Methodology will make important contributions to lowering statistical business costs by developing more cost effective designs and assisting process improvement. To do this we will help strengthen statistical leadership, and assist in the broader development of statistical skills across the GSS. Finally we will be making some important contributions to some major developments. Methodology continues to support the 2011 census, and is also working to improve population and migration statistics.
