Abstract
In the UK and as in most other countries, there is a shortage of organs available for transplantation. This means that consideration has to be given to using organs that may not be optimal. The risk that this may adversely affect survival of transplant recipients causes concern, but reducing the donor pool by excluding such donors would compromise the survival of those waiting to receive a transplant. So how should a patient awaiting a lung transplant react to the offer of an organ from a donor with a positive smoking history? How does the subsequent survival time of a patient who receives a split liver differ from that of a recipient of a whole liver? How do outcomes following kidney transplantation in the UK compare to those of other countries? Statistical methods are used to address these issues, and some will be described and illustrated in this talk.
