In this seminar Professor Rougier will present some recent work on estimating the global frequency/magnitude relationship for large explosive volcanic eruptions, and discuss some of the implications for risk management. Professor Rougier will also describe his experience with the media which this paper caught the attention of. Professor Rougier is a Professor of Statistical Science in the School of Mathematics at the University of Bristol. His research focuses on uncertainty and risk assessment for large-scale hazards, notably natural hazards. Over the last few years Professor Rougier has worked on avalanches, floods, explosive volcanic eruptions, volcanic ash detection, extreme weather early warning systems, and sea-level rise. Prior to that he worked on climate modelling and climate projections. Professor Rougier also studies the foundations and the philosophy of inference, and until recently was the Statistical Inference lecturer for the Academy of PhD Training in Statistics (APTS)
