In S3RI we can offer postgraduates a number of opportunities to support undergraduates' learning within several subject areas.
Many of our PhD students can gain some (paid) teaching experience by helping out with tutorial and other classes for undergraduate students.

Every PhD student in Social Statistics and Demography is offered the opportunity to gain some (paid) teaching experience by helping out with tutorial and problem classes for undergraduate students.
The opportunities include tutorial classes for our two first year undergraduate modules in Population and Society and Demographic Methods, in which undergraduates from a wide range of backgrounds are introduced to the main substantive issues in demography and how population change is measured.
Perhaps the most important area in which PhD students contribute to the Division's teaching is the first year undergraduate module Introduction to Quantitative Methods. This module is taken by more than 200 students in the Social Sciences reading for degrees in Sociology, Politics, Criminology, Population and Geography. The module involves weekly tutorials and computer workshops which are run by PhD students. You will also have the opportunity to mark coursework assignments and examination scripts.
PhD students with particular expertise may also be invited to contribute to second and third year undergraduate modules by taking tutorials and running workshops. These can be particularly challenging but also great fun.
Having to explain statistical and demographic concepts to students is an excellent way of making sure you understand them clearly yourself, so this teaching activity contributes to you own personal development and can help you improve your PhD thesis!
