Ms Katherine Harris is Postgraduate Research Student within Social Statistics & Demography at the University of Southampton.

At undergraduate level (BSc Sociology) I maintained a running average of a high upper second and my dissertation received the highest mark in the division of Sociology and Social Policy. I was awarded scholarships in both my second and third years for outstanding academic achievement, being ranked among the top three in my division, and I graduated with a first.

A Masters in Demography introduced me to a variety of statistical packages including STATA, MLWin and R. My dissertation on educational inequality in Mexico was an excellent opportunity to become competent in the application of a variety of statistical methods and techniques.

My PhD on HIV/AIDS in Lesotho is still in the early stages, however, the thesis will very much be written from a gender perspective, examining changes in HIV/AIDS knowledge, attitudes and behaviour in the context of changing gender roles. The thesis will explore among other issues, whether the increasing levels of female of employment have resulted in women having more power in negotiating sexual relationships and condom use.

I am particularly interested in inequalities, especially in the developing world, resulting in a PhD thesis topic (on HIV/AIDS in Lesotho) that is very much focussed on gender inequality and poverty.
