Research

Government agencies from around the world, public and private sector and non-governmental organisations, charities and academics, all turn to S3RI when they need cutting-edge expertise in statistics, demography and social surveys, especially in the development of methodologies. We can call on world-leading academics from across the University of Southampton including social, health and physical scientists, engineers and mathematicians to work with us on projects. Our research always has real-world impact and our findings are used by S3RI lecturers to educate the next generation of expert statisticians.

Our research is focused on five themes:

Survey methods

Statistical methods for surveys and censuses of social, economic and environmental populations, including sampling and estimation, measurement methods and imputation of missing data.

Design of experiments

The development of efficient methods of planning experiments in science and industry and of drawing conclusions from the resulting data.

Modelling

Statistical methods for the analysis of studies in science and the social sciences, including methods for the analysis of data with complex structure.

Policy and evaluation

The use of statistical methods for the evaluation of national and international policies or programmes and the analysis of quantitative data relevant to policy, including methodology and substantive applications.

Biostatistics

The application of statistical methods to the design and analysis of clinical trials and community and public health programmes.
