We wanted to find out about participants experiences of taking part in the SAFA study (Spironolactone for Adult Female Acne) and the difficulties they may have encountered in the course of the SAFA study. For example, experiences signing up and taking part in the SAFA study, experiences of the appointments, taking the study medicine and access to health services during the SAFA study.
Interviews with participants helped us to understand their experiences on the SAFA study and how future processes can be improved.

Participants had the opportunity to discuss the interview study with a researcher from the University of Southampton by telephone or email.
If they agreed to take part, a researcher of the University of Southampton contacted them by telephone or email to arrange an interview at a convenient time.
The interview lasted 30-45 minutes and was carried out via telephone or video call (depending on preference). Participants were asked questions about their experiences of taking part in the SAFA study.
If they gave permission, the interview audio was recorded so that the researcher could analyse and type it up. Names were not used and any direct quotes from the interview remained anonymous. If participants didn't wish for their interview to be recorded, they were still be able to take part in the interview and the researcher took notes during the interview. The notes were destroyed once typed up and anonymised.
No, it is entirely up to individuals to decide whether to take part or not to take part. Taking part in the interview was entirely optional.
If particpants decided not to take part in the interview, their participation in the main SAFA study was not be affected in any way.
