SCC Seminar: ‘Living Together?’: The ECtHR, Veiling and Prevent

Published: 15 May 2019

On 15th May, Dr Megan Pearson gave a talk on the effects of the ECtHR’s judgment in SAS v France in 2014 and its decision that the need to ‘live together’ could justify interferences with freedom of religion.

Liav Orgad has argued in the context of immigration that there is a trend towards ‘cultural defence’ policies which, in an effort to preserve liberal values, paradoxically undermine them.  This talk argued that the ECtHR’s idea of ‘living together’ is a clear illustration of this and considered its consequences for other kinds of cultural defence type policies such as Prevent.
