Access to Southampton (A2S)

Update on A2S 2021 entry programme - COVID-19

Unfortunately, due to the situation around COVID-19, we will be unable to run the A2S summer schools this year. As such, we have revised the programme so that applicants are still able to gain some insight into studying at University level, and to develop some of the skills necessary for successful HE study.

The information below is for the revised programme for 2021 entry to the University. Applications have been extended to 30 June 2020.

What are the benefits of Access to Southampton?

Academic Insight

Whilst we aren't able to run our summer schools as usual this year, as the first part of the programme, successful applicants will get the chance to gain insight into their chosen subject or wider discipline, through resources posted to the University Virtual Learning Environment by academics and students.

They will also be have access to online sessions on skills needed for higher education, designed to broaden their understanding of studying at a research led university. To consolidate their learning we may ask applicants to submit short formative assessments based on the topics covered.

We aim to launch make these resources available to successful applicants in mid August.

E-Mentoring

The next stage of the A2S programme will be online support from a current University of Southampton student. They will be able to share their experiences of applying to and studying at University, giving an insight into what it's really like to be a student at Southampton and increasing awareness of the demands of studying at University.

Year 13 A2S transition and skills event

When students undergo the transition from school/college to University, they are faced with a range of new experiences and challenges, from being taught and learning in different way to becoming more independent. This day of workshops will help prepare you for the transition to University life by providing information and guidance on topics such as research skills, academic integrity, time management and budgeting.

A2S Scholarship

Those who successfully complete the A2S programme in full and within the required deadlines will receive a £1000 scholarship in their first year of study when they enrol at the University of Southampton. As a successful A2S student you may also be eligible for additional scholarships, programmes and opportunities whilst at the University of Southampton.

Eligibility for additional admissions consideration

Students who complete the programme in full could be eligible for additional consideration in the admissions process when they apply to the University of Southampton. Depending on the course you are applying to, this could take the following forms:

a) an admissions offer which is lower than the typical offer for that programme;

b) additional consideration and you will not be rejected solely on the basis of predicted (or actual) grades;

c) a guaranteed interview (or similar additional opportunity dependent upon the discipline).

Access to Southampton does not guarantee an offer from the University. Admissions decisions are based on a combination of your predicted grades, content of your UCAS personal statement, UCAS reference, interview (for some courses) and the additional information provided on the A2S application forms. You must meet any standard GCSE entry requirements for the course.

How to apply

The deadline for applications has been extended to 30 June 2020.
