What is this talk/activity about?
Numbers are everywhere, and we have the power to understand where they come from and what we can learn from them.
We are surrounded by numbers, some obvious and in plain sight, other less obvious or hidden. One example from antiquity is the golden ratio, beloved of architects and mathematicians, among others. In this talk, I'll highlight some of my favourite numbers (including the golden ratio) and explain the role they play in the world around us.

Professor James W Anderson
Professor James W Anderson is a Professor of Mathematics at the University of Southampton.
He is known for his work on spaces of deformations of Kleinian groups, which are discrete groups of isometries of hyperbolic spaces, and on mapping class groups of hyperbolic surfaces. He is also the author of a popular undergraduate textbook on Hyperbolic Geometry.
