'Dickens made me miss the Queen's Funeral': A public lecture by Dr Mary Hammond

On 11th August Dr Mary Hammond (English) gave a public lecture at the annual conference of the International Dickens Fellowship, held this year at the University of Portsmouth in honour of the bicentenary of Dickens's birth in the city.

Entitled '"Dickens made me miss the Queen's funeral": the impact of Charles Dickens on ordinary readers', Dr Hammond's hour-long talk and Q&A session drew an enthusiastic audience of Dickens fans of all ages and nationalities from among the 200 who had gathered for a weeklong celebration of their favourite author's life and works.

Mary is currently working on an Arts and Humanities Research Council -funded project on the writing, publishing and global adaptation and reception histories of Great Expectations.
