Enjoy reading aloud or willing to have a go? Want to support a worthy cause? Sign up now for the 24-hour International Dickens Charity Read-a-thon in aid of the Southampton Cancer Immunology Centre!

Organised by the Faculty of Humanities this event will take place over the weekend of Saturday 14th and Sunday 15th January 2017, with the timings being 9AM – 9PM on both days, Avenue Campus, Lecture Theatre C. Our aim is to raise money for the planned new Immunology Centre through a sponsored public team reading of the whole of Charles Dickens’s novel Great Expectations in as many different languages as possible. (We may even beat the current world record for consecutive non-English reading aloud …)

Volunteers from across the university and beyond are needed to read a chapter or a short passage either in English or in another language of their choice, and to register for sponsorship through the Southampton University Cancer Immunology Centre’s Just Giving site. If you would like to support this fantastic event and help us raise money for the Centre for Cancer Immunology, please visit the JustGiving page.

Contact Mary Hammond ( for details of how to sign up to read a section of the novel, to sponsor the team, or to help out on one or both of the days. You don’t have to attend the whole event to take part, just do whatever you can, even if it’s just dropping in for a while to cheer us on.
