Event details
This talk focuses on Wilde’s uneasy affiliation with the Liberal Party at a time when Gladstone’s advocacy of Home Rule split his political base. It explores Wilde’s involvement in writing for periodicals supportive of Liberal politics and the ways in which some of their editors turned violently against him during the trials, and addresses the debate about the ways in which the Wilde trials protected the prime minister, Lord Rosebery, from accusations of homosexuality.
