The SIAM bylaws specify how Student Chapters are formed;  see the SIAM bylaws for details. The Chapter shall not affiliate with any other organization without first obtaining the written approval of SIAM. Provisions for SIAM Student (University) Chapters are contained in the SIAM Bylaws and are included in these Rules. No provisions of these rules shall be construed so as to contradict the Bylaws of SIAM.

The objectives of SIAM, as established in the Certificate of Incorporation, are:

  • to further the application of mathematics to industry and science
  • to promote basic research in mathematics leading to new methods and techniques useful to industry and science
  • to provide media for the exchange of information and ideas between mathematicians and other technical and scientific personnel

Purposes of the Student Chapter shall be consistent with the objectives of SIAM. The purposes of the Chapter are:

  • to incentive activities related to the application of mathematics to industry and science within the University of Southampton
  • to encourage interaction between undergraduate and postgraduate students at the University of Southampton and other universities towards the development of mathematics and its applications
  • to increase interaction between students in mathematics and other disciplines
  • to encourage mathematics students to exchange information and present their work in a friendly environment

The activities intended for this chapter are:

  • informal student seminars, where students from the University of Southampton and other universities have a chance to share their work
  • special talks from distinguished speakers, e.g., professional researchers and practitioners, in mathematics and its applications
  • an annual chapter meeting, giving students from the chapter and other institutions a chance to present their research and network with their colleagues

Student chapter members will be recruited either from the University of Southampton or other higher education institutions subject to the approval of the officers.
