Professor Christopher Stephens is Emeritus Professor Medical Education within Medicine at the University of Southampton.


Professor Chris Stephens, MB BS MA Ed MBA, FRCGP FHEA FCMI FAcMEd is Emeritus Professor Medical Education in the Faculty of Medicine University of Southampton.

Appointments held

Between 2010 - 2015 he was Associate Dean (Education and the Student Experience) for the Faculty of Medicine where he had responsibility for leading the development and implementation of Faculty educational strategy, student recruitment, educational innovation, educational quality assurance and enhancing student experience.

Professor Stephens graduated from Guys Hospital in London, after undertaking vocational training for General Practice, he was appointed as a partner in a busy eight doctor urban training practice in Southampton where he still works part time. He has been interested in learning and teaching for many years and was involved with teaching undergraduates in the practice since 1985. In 1990 he became a GP trainer and in 1994 was appointed as a part time senior lecturer in Primary Medical Care at the University of Southampton.

In 2006 he was promoted to University Director of Education

Research interests

His research and scholarship activities are educationally oriented.He has written a number of papers arround around leadership development and around staff development.

He has supervised a number of undergraduate students undertaking their 4th year study in depths. He obtained three years DfID funding for a HE Links programme through the British Council in Sri Lanka - the New Dawn project which may lead to redesigning the medical workforce.

Since 2015 he has carried out several medical educational quality assurance and advisory roles, both in the UK and Internationally, including in 2018 being one of three international experts reviewing the five Finnish medical schools for the Finnish government. This resulted a report and recommendations , as well as a user friendly summary .

Research group

Primary Care, Population Sciences and Medical Education

In 2000 Chris was appointed to the full time post of Director of Education within the School of Medicine and in 2003 became Deputy Head of School. He has undertaken a Master’s Degree in Education as well as a Master’s in Business Administration. He has been involved in curriculum development, developing tutors to teach communication skills as well as working with staff to develop their teaching roles. He led the Southampton medical school student expansion from an intake of 150 students in 1998 to 246 in 2004, helped develop an innovative widening access project to Medicine "New Pathways”, the four year graduate programme, the introduction of the BMedSc and Master in MedSc degrees as well as the Interprofessional Education across Southampton and Portsmouth Universities.

In 2006 he was awarded the title University Director of Education and in 2008 successfully led the School through their GMC QABME revalidation process.

He has undertaken a number of consultancies working with medical schools in Brunei, Malaysia, Sri Lanka and the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Kazakhstan where he worked with the senior teams of their six medical schools developing their educational leadership capacity. In 2003 he was appointed as a GMC visitor and is part of a team assessing the quality of undergraduate medical education. He has taken part in eight QABME GMC reviews of different medical schools as well as accreditation of Foundation programmes of two NHS deaneries. Since 2004 he has been a member of the General Chiropractic Council and has chaired the validation panels for the three UK Chiropractic Schools.
