A student from Winchester School of Art has won first prize at the Ryerson Social xCHANGE, a global social entrepreneurship conference and competition held at Ryerson University in Toronto, Canada.

Lloyd Turner, a third year graphic design student, was part of an international team of students whose idea for a rooftop garden scheme was awarded seed funding and venture support.

Lloyd participated in the xCHANGE alongside fellow Southampton students Kat Seager (graphic design), Jimmi Westwood (graphic design) and Stan Palmer (engineering) as part of a week-long study visit to Canada to learn about social entrepreneurship in the country. The students visited incubators at Ryerson University and the University of Waterloo, met with fellow student social entrepreneurs and participated in two design challenges around the themes of homelessness and urban resilience.

Speaking about the visit, Lloyd Turner said ‘it was brilliant to connect with so many like-minded people, all fired up and ready; it was great to see the amount of support offered to our team and our project throughout the entire week.’

The students were selected to participate in the Ryerson Social xCHANGE by the Social Impact Lab at the University of Southampton, a university-wide social leadership training programme.
