MS 307 Papers of Sir Basil Henriques

Sir Basil Henriques

Sir Basil Lucas Quixano Henriques (1890-1961), CBE, was the son of David Quixano and Agnes C.Henriques. He was educated at Harrow and University College, Oxford. In 1914 he founded the Oxford and St George’s Club, which developed into Bernhard Baron St George’s Jewish Settlement and acted as warden of the Settlement until 1947. Henriques was Vice Chairman of the National Association of Boys’ Clubs, President of the London Federation of Boy’s Clubs, Chairman of the East London Juvenile Court, 1936-55 and President of the British Diabetic Association. He was knighted in 1955. In 1916, Henriques married Rose Louise Loewe, who was known for her social work and as the author of the biography of her husband 50 years in Stepney (London, 1966).

About the collection 

The collection includes a small quantity of personal papers: a copy of the birth certificate of Rose Loewe, a certificate of the registration for Henriques’ death; photographs, including one of the Henriques on their wedding day; notebook containing entries for 1926.

Correspondence, 1915-46, including with Rabbi Israel Mattuck, Morris Joseph, Gertrude E.Spielman, Philip Waley, Sir Robert Waley Cohen, S.W.Harris, Ernest Joseph and Kopul Rosen.

Papers relating to juvenile delinquents, 1913-74, including the foundation of the Oxford and St George’s Club, London; newspaper cuttings about retirement, 1953; copies of obituaries and order of service for memorial service, 1961-5; publication by Henriques, 1917-61; reviews of Basil Henriques - a portrait; report of trustees and copies of lectures of the Basil Henriques Memorial Lecture, 1967-73; report of the committee of inquiry into the London County Council Remand Holmes, 1945.
