Introduction to the Doctoral College
The new Doctoral College, directed by Professor James Vickers, acts as a unifying and coordinating body for postgraduate research across the University and works with researchers, Faculty Graduate Schools and partner organisations.
The College acts as a hub for the University’s doctoral researcher community, fostering a vibrant and inspiring environment as well as providing a focal point for doctoral training and researcher development.
The College is taking steps to tackle less-talked about issues facing postgraduate researchers (PGRs), such as well-being and mental health. It will also encourage them to take advantage of career development opportunities and enable them to have an active voice within the University.
With robust plans in the pipeline for 2016, the College is looking to galvanise the PGR community through academic and social events, encouraging researchers to make connections and collaborate across the disciplines.
Some projects to look forward to are:
- The first ever Festival of Doctoral Research to be held at the University in May this year
- A collaborative project with Enabling Services investigating the relationship between PGR mental health and non-academic support
- More PGR focused news content on SUSSED and new social media accounts
- More cohesive administrative processes for PGR staff and enhanced data and quality management
- An improved Doctoral College website with further information and support for current and prospective students, supervisors and professional services staff members
- Furthermore, the College is hoping to strengthen the University’s capacity to respond to changes to the funding of postgraduate research training
The Doctoral College is governed by the Doctoral College Board and reports to Senate and the Academic Quality and Standards Committee.
