Philip Greenish

Philip Greenish was appointed chair of Council on 1 August 2018 having served on the University’s governing body since 2012.

Philip was chief executive of the Royal Academy of Engineering from June 2003 until December 2017.  He served in the Royal Navy from 1969 until 2003, retiring as a Rear Admiral having had responsibility in his final role for engineering, personnel and logistic support for the front line of the Royal Navy and Royal Marines.

He was educated at Cheltenham College and Durham University where he read Engineering Science, graduating in 1972, and he is a graduate of the Royal College of Defence Studies.  He is a chartered engineer, an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, a Fellow of the Institution of Engineering and Technology and a Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Engineers.  He was a Board member of Engineering UK from 2008 to 2018 and has served as a Council member on two of the UK’s Research Councils.  He was a founder trustee of the Science Media Centre and a Trustee of the Daphne Jackson Trust. He holds an Honorary Doctorate from Huddersfield University.  He was awarded the CBE in 2003.
