Albert Traverso (second from the left) graduated from Southampton in 1980 with a Masters degree in Education. He recently presented the University’s Vice-Chancellor Professor Bill Wakeham with his book – The History of Education in Gibraltar from 1704 to 2004. Co-authored with Dr Ted Archer, the book is the first comprehensive history of education in Gibraltar to be published. Dr Bernard Linares, the Gibraltarian Minister for Education and Training, formally launched the book last autumn as Gibraltar celebrated its tercentenary as a British colony. He described it as ‘a most valuable contribution to our knowledge and understanding of the development of education in Gibraltar over the last 300 years’.

In the book, the authors describe the roots and origins of the educational system and provide an insight into the legacy of the British. Much of the research for the book was originally carried out by Albert during his studies at Southampton and as part of his dissertation. After graduating, he returned to Gibraltar to continue a highly successful career in teaching until his retirement in 1990.

After the presentation, Professor Bill Wakeham said: ‘It is a particular pleasure that one of the authors, a Southampton graduate, returned to the University to present us with his book, and to know that the roots of the book lie in the research he undertook while he was here.
