The IPhD in Applied Linguistics/ELT offers a new route towards a doctorate by incorporating both taught elements and independent doctoral research. Students will gain insights into state-of-the-art knowledge in Applied Linguistics with a focus on English Language Teaching and the relevant research methods through the taught elements of this degree. On successful completion of the taught element, students will be able to focus on one particular area of research to follow through in line with the requirements of a PhD.

The programme is particularly suited to teachers and educationalists with experience, who wish to study for a PhD and feel they would benefit from having a year to become (re-)familiarised with the subject area and relevant research methods.

Assessment: Coursework, advanced skills portfolio, thesis (max. 75,000 words), viva voce

Typical entry requirements

Entry requirements: a UK Bachelor degree with upper second class-honours or higher in English, linguistics, modern languages or a related subject. See international equivalent qualifications on in your country page.

Applying: University application form with degree transcripts, two academic references, research proposal and two samples of written work

English language entry requirements: IELTS 6.5 overall, with a minimum of 6.5 in all components, or an equivalent standard in other qualifications approved by the University.

Typical course content

Programme structure

Year 1

Core modules: Description of language; Quantitative methods and statistical processes; Research and enquiry in applied linguistics 1 and 2; Second language learning or Language in society.

Three optional modules from: A wide-ranging list of professional and academic modules in applied linguistics and English language teaching.

Years 2 to 4

During year two you will complete an advanced skills portfolio, comprising a range of research and professional skill development activities; in Years 2 to 4 you will also work towards completion of an original research thesis.

Semester 1
