Payment

Please ensure that you have paid for your course via the University of Southampton Online Store before the beginning of the semester - your place will not be confirmed until payment has been made. The Online Store replaces all historical methods of payment, and eliminates the need for students to complete a separate application form. Please check that you receive an automated email from the Online Store as this is your booking confirmation.

Student number

Your student number will be given to you as soon as it is available - please be patient as these numbers are created by the University rather than the Lifelong Learning team, and so can take variable amounts of time depending on how busy Registry may be.

Please note that ID numbers will not be issued for students attending Language Clubs or Summer Intensive courses.

Email/Subscribing

*** ALL LIFELONG LEARNING STUDENTS MUST SUBSCRIBE AS SOON AS POSSIBLE TO ENSURE ESSENTIAL COMMUNICATION CAN REACH YOU ***

You will be issued with a University of Southampton email address (*****@soton.ac.uk).

After student ID numbers have been distributed, all correspondence from Lifelong Learning tutors and admin staff will be sent to this address so it should be activated as soon as possible, and checked regularly.

To activate your University email address, you must now create an account with the University by following the steps below. Please note that you must have your student number available before following these steps - please see above if you do not yet have one:

1. Go to: subscribe
2. Click on ‘Create your University computing account'.
3. Enter your ID number (your part-time University ID number can be found on your receipt), surname and date of birth.
4. Accept the terms and conditions.
5. You will be assigned a username.
6. Complete the answers to the security questions and answers (you may change the questions if you wish).
7. You will be asked to type in a password, and then type it again to confirm it. This is a safeguard to ensure you did not make an error when typing the password.
8. Tick the boxes about inclusion in the external on-line directory.
9. Click on ‘Next' when you have completed this. If no mistakes are found, you will see a message stating that you have successfully subscribed.

It is essential that you remember your username and password - but, for security reasons you must not write your password down in any place where it will be identified with you. Your account will become fully active within 30 minutes.

Accessing your email account and personal information:

You can now access and update your personal information, such as addresses and contact telephone numbers, as well as your personal University email account.

Enrolment

***ALL LIFELONG LEARNING STUDENTS MUST ENROL***

Your Lifelong Learning student profile is completely separate from any staff/student profile you may already have. You must enrol separately for your Lifelong Learning courses with your Lifelong Learning student number.

Enrolment is the point at which you formally agree to become a student member of the University for the whole, or part of, the academic year. You must enrol within seven days from the start of teaching to be entitled to tuition and access to facilities.

You should enrol online at Enrolment as soon as possible. In order to enrol you will need your Lifelong Learning username/ email address (as detailed above).

If you encounter any problems with the enrolment process please contact the Enrolment Hotline on 02380 59 8888 or email enrol@southampton.ac.uk and include your ID number.

ID card

Lifelong Learning Students are entitled to a University of Southampton Student ID card once they have enrolled. Cards will expire at the end of the academic year (31st July). ID cards can be ordered online.

Please note, if you are a member of staff or student at the University, you will already have an ID card and will not need to apply for another one.

Your card will give you access to learning resources to help support your study, and you will need the card to gain access to the building during the evening. Your ID card will also be required to use our excellent language-learning facilities and extensive resources, which include Hartley Library.

At busy times, ID cards can take two weeks (or more) to be produced, so please be patient. You will be emailed on your Lifelong Learning (****@soton.ac.uk) email address, accessible via SUSSED, when your card is ready.

Your student ID card will be available for you to collect from the Student Hub at Highfield Campus, Building 37. The Student Hub are open from Monday to Sunday 08:00-20:00. Please ensure you take valid ID (as detailed on the ID card application form) when collecting, as they are unable to release your card without this.

For further information, please visit the Student Hub website.

Instructions for your first class

Location

Unless stated otherwise, all courses will take place in Building 65 and 65a at Avenue Campus.

Car parking

Avenue campus has a very large car park, which is free after 4pm each day and there is also some local on-street parking.

Classroom location

Before your course starts, we will send you an email confirming the classroom location. Please come to the main reception at the Avenue Campus (Building 65) where there will be a timetable available on the reception desk and noticeboard. If you do not have your student ID card before the course starts, we will arrange for a Tutor or a member of the Student Hub to let you into the building.

After your course has started

Textbook

During your first lesson, your tutor will confirm whether you will need a textbook and whether you will need to purchase a copy - unfortunately Lifelong Learning staff do not have lists of which textbook, if any, is used for each course.

Email account

You will have access to a University email account, created in the subscribe stage above. Check this account regularly via the Student Portal 'SUSSED' http://www.sussed.soton.ac.uk/ to ensure you receive vital information regarding changes to class schedules or cancellations and whether your ID card is ready to collect.

Blackboard

Your tutor will confirm if he/she intends to use Blackboard - not all tutors choose to utilise this facility. Blackboard can be accessed via the Student Portal 'SUSSED' www.sussed.soton.ac.uk.

Course content

The majority of our language courses are designed to develop all four language skills - speaking, listening, reading and writing, with an emphasis on speaking and understanding in the class sessions.

There may be some independent study outside of the classroom (especially for the language courses), and your progress may be affected if you decide not to undertake this.

For non-language courses, your tutor will confirm whether any preparation is necessary, but we aim for it to be possible to simply turn up to the class each week, should you wish to take this approach.

Course certificate

Courses are not credit bearing and there will be no exams or pre-assessment. However, a certificate of attendance can be provided after the completion of a course, providing the student has enrolled successfully.

Health & Safety

Your tutor will inform you of the local health & safety procedures during your first class. Click here for the University's Health and Safety policy.
