Chair a session

We’re giving students the opportunity to chair a session of student presentations at the UK’s first international student sustainability research symposium and have add new experience to your CV to demonstrate your communication skills, organisation skills, team working and social conscience to future employers.

What does a session chair do?

The student research presentations will take place during two two-hour sessions. The role of session chairs is to ensure that the two-hour sessions run as smoothly as possible, including:

• Introducing each speaker (text will be provided for this)
• Ensuring each session runs to time (you have permission to stop your fellow students from over-running if they speak for too long!)
• Managing the question and answer session after each presentation.

Don’t worry if you haven’t done this before; this symposium is designed to give you an opportunity to be trained for and develop new skills. If your application is successful, we will provide you with the following support:

• Guidance on how to chair a session at an academic symposium
• A brief training session at the beginning of the symposium

Members of the Sustainability Action team will also be on-hand to help troubleshoot any issues that arise.

In return, you will:

• Demonstrate your leadership skills to potential employers
• Be able to state on your CV that you chaired a session at a national research symposium
• Improve your transferable skills in communication and organisation
• Gain insight into this area of academic working
• Have a guaranteed place attending this symposium. You will be chairing for just two-hours of the day; the rest of the time you can enjoy being a delegate at the symposium.
