PhD Studentship entitled: Safer ship routing informed by field evidence, laboratory experiments and numerical modelling of ship interactions with rogue waves

Hi, I'm Alex Cattrell and I am studying within the Southampton Marine and Maritime Institute, University of Southampton.

I have been at the University of Southampton since 2011, graduating in 2015 with a first class honours in Master of Oceanography. I have worked with Prof Robert Marsh (Ocean and Earth Science) using global ocean assimilation models to inform ship routing to increase the maritime industry’s safety and efficiency. I have continued this multidisciplinary research with the expertise of Dr Sally Bennett (Engineering) to assess the impact of rouge waves on ships.

The overall aim of my Ph.D. project is to improve maritime safety and efficiency with an improved understanding of the impact of freak waves on ships.

This multidisciplinary project brings together oceanography and maritime engineering, and requires a diverse supervisory team. Dr Sally Bennett (Engineering and the Environment, Fluid Structure Interactions) has extensive knowledge of freak waves and experimental modelling of wave-ship interactions. Professor Robert Marsh (Ocean and Earth Science, Physical Oceanography) brings computational ocean modelling and forecasting experience, physical oceanography knowledge and industry links. Dr Ben Moat (National Oceanography Centre) has diverse engineering and oceanography knowledge, practical experience, and access to sea-going oceanographic research vessels.
