PhD Studentship in Microplastics in the environment and risks to human health

Hi, I'm Christina Thiele and I am a Leverhulme Trust Doctoral scholar studying within the Southampton Marine and Maritime Institute, University of Southampton.

The Leverhulme Trust Doctoral Scholarship (LTDS) is giving me the opportunity to conduct interdisciplinary research. I am very excited to embark on a journey bringing together marine ecology, environmental science as well as aspects to human health to address problems related to microplastics in the marine environment.

There are three main parts to this project. I want to uncover the spatial extent of microplastics found in marine food sources. In addition, there is a need to answer questions regarding the uptake of microplastics by marine organisms using model species such as the native oyster Ostrea edulis. Last, but not least, there are potential health risks to people that need to be explored, e. g. through transfer of microplastics themselves as well as transfer of pollutants previously adsorbed to microplastic particles.

My supervisory team is as interdisciplinary as the project itself: Dr Malcolm Hudson (Faculty of Engineering and the Environment), Dr Anthony Jensen (National Oceanography Centre), Prof Andrea Russell (Chemistry Faculty of Natural & Environmental Sciences), Prof David Coggon (Faculty of Medicine) and Prof Stuart Harrad (School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences, University of Birmingham).
